Founded by a parliamentary decision, Södertörn University opened in Flemingsberg in 1996 and has about 14,000 students. It has awarded doctoral degrees since 2010. It teaches humanities, social sciences, natural sciences and technology, plus police education. Research on the Baltic Sea region and Eastern Europe is a strong profile. Central Stockholm is 19 minutes away by train.
