Founded in 1977, the University of Gävle has about 18,500 students and around 60 programmes, on campus or online. All teaching sits on one campus by the Gavle River and the Boulogner Forest. The campus opened in 1997 in former infantry buildings from 1909. Research spans four areas, from health-promoting work to urban sustainability. Gävle has about 100,000 residents.
